The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural  institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the  largest library in the world, with millions of books, recordings,  photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections.  

Public Library of Science

PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed  to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely  available public resource. 

eScholar Repository

eScholarship provides a suite of open access, scholarly publishing  services and research tools that enable departments, research units,  publishing programs, and individual scholars associated with the  University of California to have direct control over the creation and  dissemination of the full range of their scholarship.  

ERIC

ERIC - the Education Resources Information Center - is an online digital  library of education research and information. ERIC is sponsored by the  Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of  Education. ERIC provides ready access to education literature to support  the use of educational research and information to improve practice in  learning, teaching, educational decision-making, and research.

Bibliomania (free online books). These are mostly established classics of their genre.  

BioMed Central

Tons of stuff on a wide range of topics. Not all in English. Subject  matter tends to be of a cultural rather than of a scientific nature.

Asia Times 

Asia Times, formerly known as Asia Times Online, is a Hong  Kong-based English language news media publishing group, covering  politics, economics, business and culture from an Asian perspective.  Asia Times publishes in English and simplified Chinese. 

Bloomberg Businessweek

Bloomberg Businessweek, previously known as BusinessWeek, is an  American weekly business magazine, published 50 times a year. Since 2009, the magazine is owned by New York City-based Bloomberg L.P. The  magazine debuted in New York City in September 1929. 

Christian Science Monitor

The Christian Science Monitor is an international news organization  that delivers thoughtful, global coverage via its website, weekly  magazine, daily news briefing, email newsletters, and mobile site.  

Chronicling America - Digitized Newspapers This site allows you to search and view newspaper pages from  1880-1922 and find information about American newspapers published  between 1690-present. Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the  National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as  part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).  

National Geographic Daily News 

The National Geographic is criticized as “science light,” but it  contains interesting articles on a variety of subjects and the  organization sponsors many projects of benefit to the planet.

New York Times

The New York Times is an American daily newspaper based in New  York City with a worldwide readership. Founded in 1851, the Times has  since won 132 Pulitzer Prizes, and has long been regarded within the  industry as a national "newspaper of record". It is ranked 18th in the  world by circulation and 3rd in the U.S.   

The Onion

The Onion is an American satirical digital media company and  newspaper organization that publishes articles on international,  national, and local news. The company is based in Chicago but originated  as a weekly print publication on August 29, 1988 in Madison, Wisconsin.  The Onion began publishing online in early 1996

US News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report is an American media company that  publishes news, opinion, consumer advice, rankings, and analysis. It  launched in 1948 as the merger of domestic-focused weekly newspaper U.S.  News and international-focused weekly magazine World Report

The Wall Street Journal, also known as The Journal, is an American  business-focused, English-language international daily newspaper based  in New York City, with international editions also available in Chinese  and Japanese.
